Occasionally a decision is made to change treatment of a series from class together, analyzed to class sep. While this happened somewhat frequently in the 1970s and 1980s, such decisions should now be very rare.
If only a few volumes are classed together, consider making the entire series class sep, and have the existing volumes re-classified by Catalog Management. Update the series authority record, suppress the bibliographic record from the OPAC, and update all series treatment notes in the MFHD and check-in record.
If reclassification of existing volumes would be impractical, identify a specific volume with which the new treatment will start. Update/create records as follows.
1. Make any changes necessary so the class together record reflects the current state of the serial. Do not close out the serial.
2. In the class together record, add the following field:
590 $a Beginning with [volume], volumes in this series are cataloged and classified separately.3. Make a class sep record per SCP 62A: Class Sep Series.
4. In the class sep record, add the following field:
590 $a [volumes] classed together.
1. In the class together record, add as the final 866 field:
866 41 $8 0 $z (Later volumes cataloged and classified separately)2. In the class together record, add to the 852 field:
$x NOTE: [volume]- CLASS SEP; SEE B [class sep bib number]3. In the class sep record, add to the 852 field:
$x NOTE: [volumes] CLASS TOG; SEE B [class tog bib number]
1. Create/update authority records per SCP 63: Series Authority Records.
1. In the class together record, use the statistical category code "other" in 949 subfield $g.
2. Follow SCP 62A: Class Sep Series for the class sep record.
