Prior to Sept. 1993, some monographic series were designated to be treated with title analytics ("ct=ta") or author/title analytics ("ct=ata"). Title analytic records were extremely brief, consisting of the title, imprint, and series heading. Author/title analytics were similar but also included a name heading. These records were created in Serials Cataloging.
The new practice for such series is to do "brief analytics". Newly acquired volumes are routed the same as regular analyzed series. Catalogers in MARC Dept. use OCLC copy (if found) or create original abbreviated-level records.
As encountered, all series designated as "ct=ta" or "ct=ata" are to be changed to "ct=brief"; "ct=pta" and "ct=pata" are to be changed to "ct=pbrief". Following are the steps Serials Cataloging will take in changing the series treatment.
1. Revise the series authority record to reflect the new cataloging treatment. The change in treatment will take effect with either a certain volume or a certain cataloging date, specified in subfield $d of the treatment field. For example:
644 $a f $d no. 16- (vols with copy) $5 IEN 644 $a f (anal : brief) $d no. 16- (vols without copy) $5 IEN 644 $a f (anal : author/title) $d no. 1-15 $5 IEN 645 $a t $5 IEN 646 $a c $5 IEN
2. In the MFHD record, modify the existing series treatment statement, and input a new one. For example:
$x ct=brief (no.16- ) $x ct=ata (no.1-15)
3. In the check-in record, put the new series treatment code into the pop-up note. (Do not retain the old series treatment in the pop-up note.)
4. Insert an SSO routing slip into each volume, with the location, bib number and series treatment filled in. Put the volumes on the shelf indicated for SSO volumes to be routed to MARC Dept.
