Class Together Series

Background

Follow this procedure for first-time cataloging of the serial record for a series that is to be treated as "class together" per SCP 62: Monographic Series. For cataloging a title change for an existing class together series, see SCP 62D: Series Title Changes.

A class together series record is needed for any series for which the volumes are to be classed together, whether or not there is a standing order. The purpose of the record is both to control the acquisition and routing of volumes (if there is a standing order) and to provide bibliographic access in the OPAC for the series as a whole.

Choice and form of entry are according to the current cataloging standards (AACR2).

A. Bibliographic Record

1. Catalog the serial in normal fashion. Choice and form of entry must be according to AACR2, even if pre-AACR2 copy from OCLC is being used.

B. MFHD and Item Records

1. After the caption subfield, add another subfield $x with the series treatment code (see SCP 62: Monographic Series for codes). Include any parenthetical notes as needed. For example:

$x ct=anal

$x ct=anal (v.12- only)

$x ct=pbrief (monographic vols. only)

2. Do not create items, add holdings, or count statistics for any volumes which are to be analyzed (this will be done by the catalogers doing the analysis).

3. Do create items, add holdings, and count statistics for any volumes which are not to be analyzed.

C. Authority Record

1. Update or create series authority records per per SCP 63: Series Authority Records.

D. Statistics and Final Forwarding

1. In the 948 field, use the statistical category code "ct" in subfield $g.

2. Insert an SSO routing slip into each volume to be analyzed, with the location, bib number and series treatment filled in. Put the volumes on the shelf indicated for SSO volumes to be routed to MARC Dept.
