Serial titles considered to have only current usefulness or to be of ephemeral value are designated by the bibliographers to be "Class II". Only current issues are retained (typically 6 months to a year), and none are bound.
When cataloging Class II serials, use normal procedures, with the following exceptions in the MFHD record:
First indicator: 8
Location code: npr (or other location requested by bibliographer, such as nref)
Call number: Class II
Public note: Current issues only retained
Example:
852 8# |b npr |h Class II |x v. |z Current issues only retained
If a title change occurs, consult with Periodicals Room. If any issues of the old title will be retained for a while, handle the title change in the usual way for a typical serial. However, if all issues of the old title will be discarded immediately, overlay the cataloging for the new title in the old title's record, and use a 948 field for new cataloging (ensure that the INU holdings symbol is removed from the OCLC record for the old title).
