The following Cuttering instructions for certain materials in the Femina Serial classes in Special Collections are intended to: (1) collocate serials issued by the National Organization for Women and its subordinate bodies and local chapters, and (2) reduce the likelihood of shelflist crowding in the area of W872 ("Wom").
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Cutter numbers N277 and N2771 in the Femina Serial Am and Femina Serial Eng classes are reserved and are to be used always and only for materials covered in step 1 of this document. The Cutter numbers beginning W872 are to be used always and only for materials covered in step 2 of this document in all Femina Serial classes. (As of June 1989, Femina Serial Am and Femina Serial Eng call numbers are interfiled in the Special Collections stacks and shelflist, so the Cutters may not be duplicated between the two classes.)
Examples in this document are hypothetical and may not reflect local cataloging of actual publications at time of creation of this document. Some publications are imaginary.

To reduce crowding in the shelflist, a system of "double Cuttering" will be used for main entries (corporate body, meeting, or title) beginning with the letters "wom" in ALL Femina Serial classes.
Cutter numbers
The first Cutter number will be based on the first word in the main entry. Depending on that first word, the second Cutter will be based on either the next distinctive word or the letters following certain initial letters in the first word. Thus, the first Cutter is basically a division of main entries into groups with common first words, and the second Cutter is what gives each main entry a unique identification. Use the special Cutter chart below to find the first Cutter and the basis for the second Cutter. Use the regular Cutter- Sanborn table for the second Cutter.
Small, non-distinctive words such as a, an, and, as, at, for, in, of, on, the, and to should be ignored.
If necessary, use the subtitle in devising the second Cutter number if identical (non-unique) title main entries need to be distinguished when re-classifying serials that have already been cataloged. When creating a new catalog record, use uniform title headings to distinguish identical titles, even if using pre-AACR2 cataloging copy.
Work marks
If main entry is by corporate body or meeting, the work mark for the title will come after the second Cutter. If it appears that crowding may appear in certain second Cutter numbers for title main entries, work marks may also be used also to distinguish between very similar titles, as is sometimes done with call numbers for corporate annual reports.
