The Cutter number and work mark (together comprising the "book number") make the call number for a title distinct from all other call numbers in the same classification. In general, the Cutter number is based on the main entry (whether author or title) and the work mark is based on the title (if the main entry is not a title). Construct the Cutter number and work mark as instructed in the Cutter-Sanborn Three-Figure Author Table. At times, it will be necessary to use common sense and to rely on past practices in order to make the book number "fit". However, please note the following NUL procedures which may emphasize, add to, or vary from the instructions in the Table.
Call numbers are not indexed dynamically. Newly added or revised call numbers do not appear in the index until the index is regenerated overnight. There is thus a very slight possibility that the call number you have assigned will be duplicated; these conflicts are corrected as they are encountered.
Check to see if a Cutter number has already been established for works in the same class by the same author or corporate body. If found, use that Cutter number.
Try to limit the length of the Cutter number as much as possible.
If the number from the Table is already in use, lengthen it by adding digits for the rest of the word(s) on which the Cutter is based. Avoid using "1", and never use "0". Below is a guide for assigning additional digits:
ABC 2 DEF 3 GHI 4 JKL 5 MNO 6 PQRS 7 TUV 8 WXYZ 9Though there is no official limit to the length of work marks, it is important to be as concise as possible.
Give the new title the same call number as for the previous title if the numbering scheme is being continued. If the new title is using a new numbering scheme, devise a new Cutter number. If a new numbering scheme is being used and the subject scope of the serial has changed or the Dewey classification for the subject has changed, consider assigning a new classification number as well.
Example:
old title: Journal of serials cataloging research. -- Vol. 1, no. 1 (Jan. 1985)-v. 5, no. 12 (Dec. 1989).
old Cutter: J86
new title: Advances in serials cataloging. -- Vol. 1, no. 1 (Jan. 1990)-
new Cutter: A244
If the title change is the result of a change in numbering scheme only (e.g., the serial kept the same title but reverted to v. 1, and a new record was created with a uniform title), use the call number of the former title with the addition of the letter "a" to the work mark or the digit "1" to the Cutter number if there was no work mark.
Example:
old title: Tried and true titles. -- Vol. 1 (1885)-v. 100 (1984).
old Cutter: T825
new title: Tried and true titles (1985). -- Vol. 1 (1985)-
new Cutter: T8251
If the supplement is so closely related to the parent title that another classification number and/or Cutter number would be undesirable, use the book number of the parent with the addition of "sup" on the next line.
Example:
parent title: NULSA occasional papers. -- Vol. 1 (1970)-
call number: 027.7;N879n
supplement: NULSA occasional papers. Supplement series. -- No. 1 (Apr. 1, 1989)-
call number: 027.7;N879n;sup.
Use the call number of the original language edition (or the edition that the library has, if the library does not have the original) and add an upper-case "X". Follow the "X" with an upper case letter for the first letter of the name of the language into which the work is translated, unless that language is English, in which case the "X" would be followed by nothing. (E.g., if the work is a translation into French, add "XF" to the call number of the original language edition.) If the book contains both the original language and a translation, do not use "X" after the Cutter.
Example 1:
original, in Latin: Villae romanae. -- No 1 (avril 1976)-
Cutter: V712
translation into English: Roman villas. -- No. 1 (Apr. 1976)-
book number: V712X
Example 2:
original, in English: Piggy, Miss. The fabulous life of moi. -- Vol. 1, no. 1 (July 12, 1988)-
book number: P631f
translation into French: Piggy, Miss. Moi, la vie fabuleuse. -- T. 1, no 1 (juil. 12, 1988)-
book number: P631fXF
Use the appropriate Dewey number and Cutter number for the person or body being treated, and add an upper-case "Z" followed by lower-case letter(s) for the main entry of the work being cataloged. Do not use "Z" for bibliographies of individuals, for works in Dewey decimal classes 920-929, or for works in subdivisions -092 or -0924.
Example:
title: Stephen King quarterly. -- No. 1 (summer 1989)-
book number: K54Zs
For a subsequent work by the same author or corporate body, expand the work mark with a period and a letter for the title of the work.
Example:
first work: Stephen King Society. Proceedings of the ... annual meeting. -- 1st (1988)-
book number: K54Zst
second work: Stephen King Society. Notes from the quarterly business meeting. -- Spring 1989-
book number: K54Zst.n
