Performance Excellence Training for the University Library

As many staff are aware, we have been in search of a more effective method of evaluating employee performance. In past years, supervisors and staff have expressed their concern about our current performance evaluation method and that it is in need of improvement.

To address these concerns, the Library will be implementing an innovative method of evaluating performance within the Library. We will be partnering with central human resources to put into practice the Performance Excellence Process in the library. This new process has been successfully piloted and is being used by additional schools and departments around the university.

The Performance Excellence process takes a more holistic approach to employee performance combining goals and objectives, performance, and training and development opportunities. This process will give supervisors and employees a foundation from which to start by setting expectations and goals at the beginning of the year. In addition, this process facilitates the opportunity for ongoing dialogue about these goals and objectives throughout the year.

The implementation began in June 2005 with the inital training sessions for Library supervisors, followed in July by staff information sessions about the Performance Excellence process. The Library will complete one full cycle using this new process in July 2006.

The Library is close to completing its first year using this new process and we are in the process of holding Part 2 of the supervisor training sessions in April and early May 2006.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please contact either Peter Devlin or Rebecca Griffiths.
