Jeff Garrett, who chaired the jury for the 2006 Hans Christian Andersen Medal for international children’s literature, has donated 290 children’s books from the competition to the Library’s collection of medal nominees, bringing the total number of books now in the collection to more than 2,000. Included in the donation are works by this year’s two award-winners: author Margaret Mahy of New Zealand, and illustrator Wolf Erlbruch of Germany.
This year’s Chicago Hand Bookbinders [CHB] Exhibition, “Books About Books,” which opened April 4 on the third-floor mezzanine of Deering Library, raises the question “What is a book?” says Karen Jutzi, a Library Conservation Technician who is also the CHB’s Program Chair. A recent tour of the exhibit, guided by Karen and Kitz Rickert, also a Library Conservation Technician and CHB member, highlighted how many different ways that question can be answered.
The hundreds of people who make the Library appear to function effortlessly from day to day are not always visible to—or, alas, appreciated by—the public. But on Tuesday, April 4, the Library Staff Development Committee and NULSA joined forces to recognize them.

In mid-March, Nina Barrett joined Patti Strait in the Library’s Public Relations Office, as a part-time writer. She’ll be taking on much of the editorial work for Library publications including Libstaff Links, Library Briefings, and Footnotes.
Caitlin Savage has been promoted to the position of Library Privileges Supervisor as of Monday, March 27. Caitlin has worked for the past year as the afternoon Exit Assistant and has worked at several other libraries, including Columbia College Library and Indiana University Library.
Devin Savage is the new Information Commons Coordinator for the Reference Department. We’re delighted to have him working again in the IC. He’s familiar to us as a long-time volunteer at the desk, dating back to the days when it was known as the GIC.
