A special exhibition took place in the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies earlier this month. The exhibition was mounted in honor of the national conference of the Society of Dance History Scholars being held on the NU campus through the weekend of June 10.
The exhibition featured works on African and African American dance and focused in particular on the relationship during the 1930s between Melville Herskovits and choreographer Katherine Dunham who, during the mid-1930s, visited the Caribbean for the first time to study dance. Dunham was a University of Chicago anthropology student whose academic work was being supervised by Herskovits. The exhibit also featured materials drawn from the Katherine Flowers papers.

Roberto Sarmiento, Head, Transportation Library, was recently chosen to participate in the 2005 Thinking Outside the Borders: Library Leadership in a World Community, a program of the University of Illinois Mortensen Center for International Library Programs and the Illinois State Library. Claire Stewart, Head, Digital Media Services, and Roberto Sarmiento, Head, Transportation Library, were recognized as two of the 75 “Notable Alumni” during the Dominican University Graduate School of Library and Information Science 75th anniversary reception at the ALA annual meeting in Chicago. The 75 notable alumni were selected by the school based on their contributions to society, librarianship, or uniqueness.
The Deering Society Recognition Dinner on June 15 brought together many of the Library's major donors and board members. Guests were delighted to visit Deering Library, to view the wonderful exhibits set up for the event, and to share their stories and memories of Northwestern. Marie A. Quinlan received this year's Deering Family Award for her generous support of Library conservation and preservation. While Marie was unable to attend the event due to illness, her good friend Steve Pardy accepted the award on her behalf.
The event went very nicely and was important in establishing new connections between donors, board members, and Library staff. I'd like to thank the many people who helped make the evening a success.
