The theme for the 2005 Chicago Hand Bookbinders exhibition, now on display in the Library's main exhibit space, is a salute to John James Audubon’s Birds of America.

Bookbinders from the Chicago area, Arizona, Massachusetts, and Kentucky address this theme in works ranging from traditionally bound leather books to objects incorporating non-traditional materials such as an actual bird's nest.

Library staff will have first crack at the book sale on Thursday, April 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale will be held in the Ver Steeg Faculty Lounge and offer more than 7,000 new and used books in areas ranging from journalism and media to art and literature.

University Librarian David Bishop has received the Academic Library Staff Member of the Year Award from the North Suburban Library System (NSLS).

Beginning this spring, Roberto Sarmiento takes on new responsibilities with the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and the Special Libraries Association (SLA).

A new Bibliographic Access to Electronic Resources (BAER) committee has been formed to work this spring and summer. This group will help define a new Voyager database, separate from NUcat, in which metadata records about free web sites will be stored and made accessible.

Two search committees have been formed to fill librarian positions in the Catalog and Reference Departments.

On February 28, Northwestern University Library joined the Medill School of Journalism to host a panel discussion featuring three prominent women journalists of different generations. The program was titled "Feminist or Feminazi? Press Coverage of the Women's Movement."

The Music Library was well represented at the Music OCLC Users Group (MOUG) Annual Meeting and the Music Library Association (MLA) Annual Conference, both held in Vancouver, B.C., in February.

Starting with the Winter 2005 issue, each Library department will receive its own color copy of The Lantern. The staff newsletter will also continue to be published electronically.
