Kathleen E. Bethel, African American Studies Librarian, was recently awarded the 2004 DEMCO/ALA Black Caucus Award for Excellence in Librarianship, presented to a librarian who has made a significant contribution to promoting the status of African Americans in the library profession. On July 1, General Bookbinding Company began binding the Library's books. Based in Chesterland, Ohio, General Bookbinding is one of eight binderies across the U.S. that is run by Information Conservation Inc., the nation's largest. Among the many advantages offered by General are the web-based online system for preparing binding information that facilitates tracking materials, communications and information exchange. Most noteworthy is the fact that SEL can, for the first time, prepare their binding by computer---before July 1, they had used a typewriter to prepare forms in triplicate for each title.

On July 27, an exhibit titled “The Hans Christian Andersen Collection at Northwestern: Illustrated Children’s Books From Around the World” opened in the main lobby of the Library and will run through September 9. The exhibit features the work of 27 illustrators who were nominated for the 2004 Hans Christian Andersen Medal for Illustration. This medal is awarded to an illustrator every two years by the International Board on Books for Young People. The exhibit cases also include examples of other recent award winners for children’s book illustration. Visitors to the exhibit can examine some of the international books from the Curriculum Collection on a book truck adjacent to the exhibit and can view an accompanying exhibit of Africa-related children’s books in the exhibit cases at the entrance to Africana in Five East.
