Bethel awarded DEMCO/ALA Black Caucus Award for Excellence in Librarianship
Kathleen
E. Bethel, African American Studies Librarian, was recently awarded the
2004 DEMCO/ALA Black Caucus Award for Excellence in Librarianship, presented
to a librarian who has made a significant contribution to promoting the
status of African Americans in the library profession. The award recognizes
Bethel’s work with BCALA, the ALA Executive Board (2002-2005) and
Council (1996-2005), and her service as a trustee of the DuSable Museum
of African American History, Inc. in Chicago.

Bethel is also the new co-chair of the American Library Association/Society
of American Archivists/American Association of Museums Joint Committee
(ALA/SAA/AAM Joint Committee). The committee is charged with promoting
cooperation and communication among professionals of all types of collections-holding
organizations, including libraries, archives, and museums. These institutions
share a common purpose in the acquisition, preservation, and promotion
of collections that document the range of human expression, experience,
and knowledge.
