The Touchscreen
Every workday at the Multimedia Center requires use of the Touchscreen.

Patching Equipment to a Carrel (One User):

  1. First, you need to select your source equipment. On the Touchscreen, press the icon for the specific source of equipment (e.g. #7 VCR) that you wish to patch to a carrel.
  2. Once you've selected the source, press the icon for a specific carrel (e.g. Carrel # 7) to select that carrel.
  3. Now that both icons are selected, press the green icon labelled "Execute" (located in the lower right portion of the Touchscreen) to finalize the patching.

Patching Equipment to a Carrel (Two or More Users):

Sometimes more than one user needs to simultaneously view the same media.
  1. First, press the icon for a specific source, just as you would if you were dealing with only one user.
  2. Once you've selected the source , press the icon for each carrel to which you need to patch the signal (e.g. Carrel 15, Carrel 18, and Carrel 19).
  3. With all of these icons selected, press the green icon labelled "Execute" to finalize the patching.
  4. The key thing to remember when patching multiple users to the same source tape is that control of the remote rests with one of the carrels in the group. Users will have to experiment to find out who has remote control.

Patching Media Already In-progress

  1. First, inform the user that the media is already being viewed by another person, but that you can easily have them join in. The new user will not have control of the remote.
  2. If they want to join, first press the icon which corresponds to the source.
  3. Next, press the icon for a carrel to which you are assigning the new user.
  4. Press the icon marked "Execute" to complete the patch.
  5. Remember to REPATCH the original user. This will ensure that the original user retains remote contol.
  6. Get the new user's ID card. Even if they will not be using a remote control, it is still important that we obtain a Northwestern-related ID card from every user.
  7. If one of the users watching the video decides to leave early, be sure to check if others are still viewing the media before you decide to rewind.

Unpatching

  1. Press the icon labelled "Clear" and it turns red.
  2. Next, press the icon for each carrel that you wish to unpatch. This should highlight these icons with the same "Clear" message.
  3. Press "Execute" to complete the unpatching.

Calibrating the Touchscreen

Every now and then it seems as though the Touchscreen isn't as sensitive to your touch as it used to be. When this happens, it's time to ask Carol Anthony to calibrate the Touchscreen.
