During the average two or three-hour work shift, a large amount of media
can pile up. In addition to these items which need to be reshelved, sometimes
the Department Assistant will give you media that are entering the collection
for the first time and thus need to have room made for them in the stacks.
Here are some things you should know about shelving and reshelving, including
a few helpful tips to make your shift a little bit less stressful:
- The most important bit of advice concerning shelving and
reshelving is: do it often! Don't let media pile up over the entire
course of your
shift. This will only leave you with a huge pile to reshelve before
you leave, which can be especially problematic if you have somewhere
to be immediately after work The best thing to do is to reshelve
media every time a small pile gathers on the cart. This will
considerably reduce the amount of work you have to do at the end of
your shift and likewise will help you get out of work on time.
- You are responsible for shelving and reshelving
all media during your shift. It's unfair to shove your work
off on the person who comes in after you and it creates unneccessary
tension between employees.
- Be sure to equally divide the shelving and
reshelving between you and your co-worker.
- New media will take longer to shelve as you
will need to make room for these items in the stacks. Shelve
new media the first chance you get during a slow period.
- Be careful when shelving and reshelving. Never
rush through it. Mis-shelved media is LOST media. Lost media
must be found, and you will eventually have to locate it by shelfreading
the collection - a tedious and boring task.
