The Online Job Manual for Student Consultants provides you with detailed
descriptions on how to perform your job at the Marjorie Iglow Mitchell Multimedia
Center. Here is a brief overview which covers some of the most important
daily aspects of your job. Many of these topics are outlined in greater
detail throughout the Online Job Manual.
- You should always try to check in or open a few minutes ahead of your
scheduled time if possible. This is particularly important during weekday
hours when the student that you are replacing has to get to a class.
- When you come in to work your shift, always check the schedules for
the Forum Room, Video Theater, and 3746 Seminar Room (check Meeting
Maker) before you do anything else. It is essential for you to know
what classes are coming in during your shift and to be ready for them
ahead of time. In general, this means having the projection system warmed
up (turn on 15 minutes before the start of a class), doors unlocked
15 minutes before the start of a class, lights turned on in the room,
the computer turned on or set up, the media loaded in the equipment
and cued to start if it is from our collection, and sound levels checked
and set. It is very upsetting for a faculty member to come in and find
the room locked and nothing ready.
- Always rewind videotapes! Always check and be certain that a video
is rewound before you reshelve it.
- You absolutely must reshelve media
on a continual basis during your shift as users finish watching them.
You may not leave your shift without reshelving the media. If everyone
did this, the shift of the last hour of the day would have to re-shelve
for the whole day. This is unfair.
- Please remember to be aware when classes are finished using the Video
Theater, Forum Room and Seminar Room. Check the security camera and
Meeting Maker to see when classes are finished. For security reasons
it is essential that you get media out of these rooms, turn off all
equipment,
and
lock the rooms as soon as viewing is completed. This must be done
unless
classes are booked in Meeting Maker back-to-back, or scheduled less
than one hour apart.
- The use of the Multimedia Center is strictly limited to Northwestern
users with current ID cards (a wildcard or a purple Library Borrower's
Card), and to University of Chicago students who have reciprocal privileges.
You must check ID's at the counter when users give you their request
slips.
