No matter how easy it may sound to you, somehow the task of turning
on a monitor and presing a button marked "PLAY" is incredibly difficult for
many users. Each carrel has a sheet of instructions, but, sometimes a sheet
of
instructions isn't read. Here are some common problems that users often
face at the carrels which may need your attention:
Common problems:
- The monitor is not generating a picture. People may
not know to turn ON the monitor. Before you start troubleshooting,
casually ask the patron if they switched on the monitor.
- The volume at the carrels does not change when the VOLUME button
on the remote control is pressed. If a user approaches you in a state
of confusion over how to adjust the volume, be sure to tell them to
use the volume knob on the carrel itself, not on the remote control.
Go over to the carrel and show them where the volume knob is, if necessary. Note: Users often experience audio-related problems at the carrels.
If you cannot fix the problem yourself with some general
troubleshooting, move the user to a different carrel and report
the equipment problem to Carol Anthony.
- The remote control does not function. The "IR sensor" is
a small panel located on the back wall of each carrel to the right
of the monitor. The remote control must
be aimed at this IR sensor to function. Users should see a red light
every time they press a button on the remote. Always ask the user
if they have been aiming the remote directly at this sensor or try it
yourself before beginning any extensive troubleshooting.
- No sound is coming into the headphones.
Make sure that the patron is using the correct headphone set, which
is located to the right of each carrel. Often times patrons choose the
wrong headset. Make sure that the volume control corresponding to the
carrel is turned up. Patrons may also bring in personal headphones and
plug them into the jack located next to the volume control.
General rules
- Food is not allowed in the Multimedia Center. If you see someone
taking food to the carrel, inform them politely that they need to take
their snacks into the Student Lounge. Covered drinks are now allowed
in the Library, and this includes the Multimedia Center.
- Carrels are now equipped with ethernet connections for personal laptup
use. It is located to the left of the monitor along the back wall of
each carrel.
- The Multimedia Center is physically a very small space and sound travels.
Anything above a whisper between users can usually be heard by surrounding
patrons. If someone is making a lot of noise and disturbing people around
them, ask them to quiet down.
- A good way to ensure that the above rules are followed is to walk
around the viewing carrel area every now and then during your shift.
You can take this time to push in chairs and turn off monitors that
have no viewers at them. If you see anyone violating any of the above
rules while "making the rounds," ask them to stop.
