When a multi-volume set comprises the collected
works of an author, there should be an established series authority
record for it:

The type of series (in the 008) should be coded as a multi-part set
(NOT as a monographic series) as it is a finite series.
Sometimes, however, a classed-together multi-part series may refer to
volumes on a central theme by different authors, or to the proceedings
of a conference:

Local treatment of these multi-part series with
suggested “classed-together” treatment
should always be classed-together and analyzed. It is not necessary to
consult the selector about the series treatment in these cases.

AT TIME OF ORDER
The purchase order should be linked to a set record (unsuppressed).
If copy is imported for the set record, no effort should be made to
maintain the 505 contents or to add any additional access points.
If created from scratch, the set record must include the following fields
: fixed fields for date, place of pub and lang ; 020 ; 040 ; 1xx ; 245
; 250 ; 260 ; 300 ; 4xx or 800 ; 948.
A note should be added in subfield $a to the 948: ct=mvset, anal.

The following note should be inserted in subfield
$x of the 852: “ATTN. CAT: CLASS TOGETHER”.

AT TIME OF RECEIPT
Volume holdings should be added on receipt to the 866 field of the holdings
record of the set.
The following note should be inserted in subfield $z of the 852: INDIVIDUAL
VOLUMES ARE CATALOGED SEPARATELY AND CAN BE FOUND UNDER THEIR RESPECTIVE
AUTHORS AND TITLES.
Any other notes regarding duplication, returns, etc. should be added
as a note in subfield $x of the 852.

As each volume in the set is received, copy should
be imported as an analytic. If no analytic copy is available, a provisional
record must be created.
The following note should be added to subfield $a at the end of the 948
field for each analytic: set,anal

Also add the note “set, anal” to subfield $x of the 852
field in the holdings of each analytic.

Once received, they should be routed for cataloging
to the AV shelves.
AT TIME OF CATALOGING
After classifying the first volume received in the set, the cataloger
should insert the classed-together call number in the holdings of the
set record :

The call number should also be inserted in the
082 of the series authority record, with our symbol appearing in subfield
$5 :
