This session is designed for selectors who wish to hone their instructional skills.  The Instruction and Outreach Committee will tackle broader educational-methodology issues, for those who have never provided library instruction, at a later date. We will cover the following topics:

This session will provide an overview of what a librarian can expect in a research consultation.  Included in this session will be examples of past consultations and a discussion of preparations for a consultation session. This session will also address student's expectations of research consultations.

Department/Program/Constituent Outreach: Tips and Techniques

  • Date: Friday, 08/29/08
  • Time: 1 PM-2 PM
  • Place: Reference Classroom, 2EAST
  • Instructors: David Easterbrook, Harriet Lightman, Bob Michaelson

Please join us for a group discussion of some outreach strategies that work (or do not work) with different disciplinary groups. Several coordinators will lead a discussion and brainstorming session on possible approaches that liaisons might try in establishing and maintaining contact with faculty and students in their own subject areas.

Overview of Scholarly Communications

  • Date: Wednesday, 09/03/08
  • Time: 2 PM-3 PM
  • Place: Reference Classroom, 2EAST
  • Instructor: Mariann Burright, Scholarly Communications Librarian, Academic Liaison Services

The Association of Research Libraries defines scholarly communications as "the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use." This session will outline the main issues that have shaped the scholarly communications arena for the last two decades, such as the unmanageable increases in journal pricing, alternative modes of publishing, intellectual property rights of authors, and others. The session goal is to introduce participants to the breadth of the issues, and to serve as a building block for future topic-specific sessions on scholarly communications.

NIH Public Access Policy Overview: Facts & Issues

  • Date: Monday, 09/08/08
  • Time: 10 AM-11 AM
  • Place: Reference Classroom, 2EAST
  • Instructor: Mariann Burright, Scholarly Communications Librarian, Academic Liaison Services

Please join us for part-active discussion and part-presentation of the facts, rationale and scope, and compliance procedures for the NIH Public Access Mandate. The session will also cover the effect of this policy onscholarly communications issues such as rights management, open access, and economic impact on publishers.  A key feature of the session will be developing approaches to talk to faculty affected by the terms of this mandate.
