Purpose of this Site
StaffWeb is an intranet intended primarily as
a vehicle for communication among library staff. Items housed here are
not generally intended for use by the primary Northwestern University
Library clientele: students; faculty; staff from outside the library;
university alumni; and visitors from the public at large. However, this
space can and should be used for mounting items to be shared with colleagues
in the library profession. A link to Staffweb will be available from the
library's public web site. Some items housed on Staffweb can be firewalled
or restricted to certain IP addresses if it is so desired, but in general
all items will be freely available.
Structure
- Each library department will have space within Staffweb on which to
mount documents, utilities, etc… of local interest and pertaining
to internal operations, such as student employee information and communication,
staff policy and procedure manuals, departmental files and forms. This
space might also be used to mount personal professional home pages,
should staff choose to create and maintain one. No department is required
to maintain a space on Staffweb, but departments are encouraged to utilize
this space creatively to improve communications.
- Library organizations such as NULSA, Assembly of Librarians, or the
New Technology forum may also have space on this site if they so choose.
Documents housed here might include constitutions, bylaws, meeting minutes,
mailing list archives, etc…
- Formal Library committees such as the Web Development Group, Strategic
Planning Committee, or the Electronic Collections Committee may also
have space on this site if they so choose. Such space might be used
to mount both finished committee documents and works-in-progress, links
to source material, mailing list archives, etc…
- Staffweb may also be used to host web sites for professional organizations
and committees with which library staff are involved, such as committees
of ALA and its divisions. Sites housed here should be small in scale,
and may be temporary.
Construction and Maintenance
Each department, committee, etc… will be responsible
for the construction and maintenance of their portion of Staffweb. The
Web Development Group or a subcommittee thereof will oversee construction
and maintenance of the Staffweb home page, and will consider requests
to mount items that fall outside of the above criteria.
Areas of restricted access
Certain areas on this site are restricted to Northwestern
University Library networks. These areas are noted with a 
icon.
